The use of artificial intelligence has increased in the dance choreography process recently. AI was initially introduced in the field of choreography to make the notation procedure easier. But, now with advancement AI is used for creating innovative choreography based on fed data. Researchers are combining the analytical AI philosophy with the knowledge of physical dance.
AI can keep the art of choreography alive even after we lose the artist. Many projects are going on in different universities and organizations to develop deep learning based models that can automatically compose diverse dance moves, match the beat and style consistently. In the current era, researchers have produced videos showing non-professionals and humanoids mastering the dance moves of famous pop stars, and spin as well as twirl like ballerinas using deep learning based algorithms. 1- Lifeforms by Merce Cunningham
The use of choreographic software “Lifeforms” was pioneered by Merce Cunningham in the late 1980s. His lifelong passion for exploration and innovation made him a leader in applying technology to arts. Lifeforms software was able to generate movement possibilities beyond the imagination of the human body and brain. With the physical restrictions faced by Cunningham due to his age, Lifeforms gave him an alternative body and allowed him to transmit movements to his dancers.
2- Wayne McGregor’s collaboration with the Google Arts and Culture Lab
McGregor is experimenting with Google to create his work using technology. The work began at Google lab by uploading an archive repository of 25 years to train an algorithm to detect patterns. An AI tool for choreography is using this data to predict McGregor’s like dance sequence that might follow a particular pose, generating up to 40,000 iterations.
3- LuminAl project, Georgia Institute of Technology
LuminAI is an interactive art installation where participants get engaged in collaborative movement improvisation with an AI-based virtual dance partner. The AI virtual dancer analyses the human (partner) movement through the procedural representation of viewpoints movement theory and improves responses using transformed memories of past interaction with humans.

4- Rhizomatiks with Kyle McDonald
Rhizomatiks, Japan working in collaboration with media artist Kyle McDonald unveiled AI dancer (Discrete figures), a neural network trained to generate its own steps. Soon after capturing the movement of real-life dancers improvising a click track, the network was able to generate the humanoid form.
