Artificial Intelligence in healthcare promises several benefits for us. A survey conducted by IEEE revealed how the recent generation of parents think about artificial intelligence and other latest technologies with regards to the health and well-being of their Gen Alpha children. This survey has been conducted for straight four years by IEEE. The survey conducted last year in 2020 was even more important considering the COVID-19 pandemic and a drastic change in the mindset of the people with regards to the adoption of emerging technologies for automation.
Generation Alpha (Gen Alpha) refers to children born from the year 2010 till the year 2025. On the other hand, millennial parents are those who age between 18 to 34 years at present. With the advancement in technology and developments in science, the Gen Alpha children are equipped and most exposed to emerging technology in comparison to children of the previous generations. Both parents and health experts are keeping a close watch on the effects of this exposure on these Gen Alpha kids.
2020 was a forgettable year for everyone. The pandemic affected millions of lives and businesses across the globe. The emergence of technologies has also witnessed a pause in these difficult times. However, some emerging technologies like automation in areas such as food delivery, grocery delivery witnessed a surge. Autonomous robots and machines have also been embraced by people happily. The potential of artificial intelligence in healthcare is immense.
Of all the emerging technologies such as augmented reality, virtual reality, machine learning, blockchain, biometrics, artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most powerful and disruptive. Artificial intelligence (AI) is a technology that enables computers and machines to perform tasks that human beings do and also take decisions just like humans. In a nutshell, it is a way to simulate human intelligence in gadgets, devices, and machines. This technology would be quite beneficial for diverse industry verticals, more so artificial intelligence in the medical field would be a blessing for the doctors and other support staff.
Let us see what millennials have to say about the use of AI in healthcare for their Generation Alpha children:
1- 3D Printed Hearts
During the IEEE survey, when US millennials were asked whether they would be comfortable in a 3D bio-printed heart transplant in their child, only 52 percent of parents were comfortable with this idea. This clearly reflects the popularity of AI in healthcare amongst millennials in the US.
2- Robots in Medical Field
What US millennials thought about 3D printed hearts, the same trend was visible in the use of robotics in healthcare. When put up with the question regarding performing AI powered robotic surgery on their Gen Alpha children, merely 46 of US millennial parents were comfortable with this idea. This percentage indicates a steady growth in the adoption of robotics in healthcare. With the advancement in technology, this percentage is going to rise even further moving forward into the future.
3- AI-Powered Nursing
Emerging technologies like artificial intelligence have completely transformed telehealth. With AI, nursing is no longer limited to monitoring of patients on the bed. The care that nursing can offer has expanded beyond just on-bed patient care. The IEEE survey showed that 67 percent US millennials would be comfortable to leave their children with an AI-powered nurse while they stay in the hospital.
4- VR Pain Management
Like AI, virtual reality (VR) is also an emerging technology. The IEEE survey shows that 79 percent of US millennials would prefer the pediatrician to perform VR pain management rather than giving medications (pain killers).
The survey conducted by IEEE is reflective of the fact that the popularity of artificial intelligence in healthcare and robots in the medical field is growing tremendously. Artificial intelligence in healthcare has become an overarching term. The trust of millennials on AI in healthcare is a great sign for the future.
